If time is the fourth dimension, why can’t sound be the fifth?

Dimensions are much misunderstood things. And its a word badly misused by science.

Dimensions are abstract frameworks that we create, based on standard units, to calibrate and index an aspect of reality.

Space is a word with multiple meanings. In the context of dimensions, Space is the dimension of relative position, frame-worked in 3 vectors of xyz-axis (or height, length, width). And calibrated in standard units of distance e.g. miles

Time is the dimension of change. We calibrate change in standard units (hours, minutes etc). So changing position (motion) is calibrated in say miles per hour…the per hour bit being Time. Einstein designating Time as ‘The Fourth Dimension’ caused much confusion to those who came after him. It’s just a dimension. They aren’t numbered.

But there are many other calibration units we use to reference other things. For example Temperature calibrates heat. Temperature is the dimension of heat.

Sound can be measured in a number of ways, volume, tone, pitch etc. Each has a set of units (decibels for volume, not sure of tone and pitch..mghertz?).

So Sound is not just a single dimension, but multiple dimensions. Sound could be the fifth, sixth and seventh dimension, if you must.

What are your thoughts on Albert Einstein’s “time is an illusion” quote?

I think he was dead right…ish!

I wouldn’t have used the word illusion, though. I would explain Time as being an abstract noun.

Let me expand. Fundamentally the only empirical evidence of Time is quantum and compound change. Zillions of change events that are happening across the entire universe, and within each of us. The universe expanding, galaxies shifting, the solar system revolving, the Earth spinning…each of us breathing in, out, blood pumping…molecules moving, atoms vibrating, quarks decaying. Change is the universe evolving. And all change us caused by energy differential.

Time plays no part in this all encompassing flow of change.

Time is merely the way we reference change. Time has 2 distinct meanings:-

  1. The dimension of change..i.e. the abstract model we use to calibrate and index change. Time is to change what temperature is to heat. Time is abstract, change is the objective reality. Just as temperature is abstract and heat is the objective reality,
  2. The ‘flow’ of change. Time is a collective noun for a non-specifuc set of change-events. Time is to change what Traffic is to vehicles. Traffic only ‘exists’ as a non-specific collective of vehicles. Time only exist as a non-specific set of change-events.

So, if you can accept that Temperature doesn’t exist (only heat) and that Traffic is an illusion (fundamentally only individual vehicles exist), then ‘pop’…Time ceases to exist. Only change happens. Only change-events ‘exist’.

As Einstein said…time is just an illusion.

Change is the only reality. As Aristotle knew.

How do I view time exactly?

You don’t view time. Time is abstract. Its how we reference the tangible reality of change.

You view change. And change is so ubiquitous that its sometimes overlooked.

Change happens from the quantum level (too small to be discernible by the human eye) right up to the galactic and universal (too big to be discernible by the human eye).

But you notice the earth spinning (day turns to night), your own breath, your own movement, your clock ticking. Change is all around and within us.

Time is both the dimension of change (the calibration e.g. clocks) and the collective ‘flow’ of all this change.

See the change and you ‘view’ time.

Time has no beginning and end. So is space. Can time and space meet at any point, since those appear to have the same characteristics?

Who says Time has no beginning and end??

Time is how we reference change….both in measurement (the dimension of change) and in aggregate (the collective ‘flow’ of change).

So Time is abstract. It only exists in our collective minds.

Change is the underlying tangible reality.

And all change is caused by energy differential.

So there was a beginning of Time (the initial point of energy differential…Big Bang??) and will be an end of Time (the small whimper..the final exhaustion of energy differential??)
