I am not a Scientist, nor a Philosopher. I am an amateur Science Fiction writer. I wrote a series of adventure novels about The Universe Wide Web

I considered setting The Universe Wide Web ‘outside Space and Time’…not a new idea I know, one that many Sci-Fi writers have toyed, and then grappled with.

Why grapple? Why is Time that hard? In trying to set your story outside Time and Space, particularly Time, you immediately run into continuity problems with your narrative. What exactly does ‘outside Time’ mean? What is Time?

What is Time. Indeed. And so one goes on a search. What is Time? And you uncover dozens of Science (Physics) books that claim to be enquiring into Time. They invariable mean Spacetime, and they invariably mean they are going to run through Einstein’s theories…and the book end up in Black holes. “Hello!” I scream. ‘I thought you were going to tell me what Time is?” Science doesn’t know what Time is.

Well lets try Philosophy. Philosophers are far more rounded folk than Scientists, I told myself. They’ll talk sense, I hoped, before disappearing into ambling, abstract, vague, theories essentially about the experience of time…agh. Someone give me something real to hold on to!

So I was frustrated. No-one (not even Einstein) could tell me what Time is. I needed to do this myself. What’s the evidence, what do the words mean….let’s apply some common sense….

I discovered the answer was staring us all in the face…
